Norfolk Urged To Avoid Bonfires

Norfolk residents are being urged not to light bonfires as increasingly hot and dry conditions raise the risk of wildfires.

People across Norfolk are being urged not to light bonfires as another spell of hot and dry weather increases the risk of wildfires across the county.

Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service says bonfires have already contributed to a number of outdoor fires, with flames spreading rapidly through tinder-dry grass, fields and vegetation.

Some incidents have damaged land and property and required significant numbers of firefighters and equipment, placing additional pressure on crews during an already busy summer.

The warning comes as a heat-health alert takes effect from Tuesday, with temperatures forecast to climb further as the week progresses.

Firefighters are asking people to postpone bonfires until conditions become cooler and wetter. Residents are also being advised to take particular care with barbecues, cigarettes and other potential sources of ignition.

Anyone enjoying Norfolk's countryside is being reminded never to leave disposable barbecues unattended and to make sure cigarettes are completely extinguished and disposed of safely.

The county has already experienced a series of significant outdoor fires following weeks of unusually dry conditions.

Fire chiefs say avoiding unnecessary fires is one of the simplest ways residents can help protect homes, farmland and wildlife – while reducing pressure on emergency crews during the hot weather.
