Haystack Blaze Sparks Fresh Fire Warning

Tuesday, 11 August 2026 16:58

A large haystack fire near Swaffham has prompted another warning as extremely dry conditions leave parts of Norfolk tinderbox dry.

A large haystack fire near Swaffham has prompted another warning about the risk of fires spreading rapidly during Norfolk's exceptionally dry weather.

Firefighters were called to The Street in Sporle on Sunday evening after a large stack of hay caught alight. Several crews were sent to the scene as firefighters worked to contain the blaze and stop it spreading into surrounding farmland.

Crews used hose reel jets and hand equipment to bring the fire under control, with firefighters carrying out further checks for remaining hotspots after the main blaze had been extinguished.

The incident comes as Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service continues to warn that parts of the county are now tinderbox dry following prolonged hot weather and very little rainfall.

Residents and visitors are being urged to take particular care with anything that could start an outdoor fire. Bonfires and disposable barbecues should be avoided during the dry conditions, while cigarettes and other smoking materials must be extinguished and disposed of safely.

Fire crews have dealt with numerous grass, field and woodland fires during the recent dry spell, with even small fires capable of spreading quickly through parched vegetation.
