Council Challenges Local Government Shake-Up

Norfolk County Council is calling on ministers to halt planned local government reforms and has launched a legal challenge.

Norfolk County Council's deputy leader has called on the Government to halt its planned reorganisation of local government, warning the changes could come at a significant cost to taxpayers.

Robin Hunter-Clarke claims the proposed shake-up of councils across Norfolk could cost around £96 million, money he believes would be better spent on maintaining roads, improving schools and supporting adult and children's social care.

The Government's plans would replace the current two-tier system of county and district councils with new unitary authorities as part of a wider programme of local government reform.

Norfolk County Council argues the cost of implementing the changes would place unnecessary pressure on already stretched public finances and could reduce funding available for essential frontline services.

The authority has now launched a judicial review challenging the Government's decision, with council leaders hoping the courts will examine the legality of the plans before they proceed.

The Government has previously said the reforms are intended to simplify local government, improve efficiency and deliver better value for residents. The legal challenge is expected to determine whether the plans can continue as proposed.
