A man awaiting trial on a murder charge has died at HMP Norwich before entering a plea in the case.
A man awaiting trial on a charge of murder has died while in custody at HMP Norwich.
Christopher Brooks, 40, died at the prison on Wednesday. He had been charged in connection with the death of his 73-year-old neighbour, Robert Button, but had not yet entered a plea to the allegation.
As with all deaths in prison custody, the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman has launched an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding Brooks' death.
The criminal proceedings relating to the murder charge had not reached trial, and no findings of guilt had been made by a court.
Robert Button died following the alleged incident at his home in Norfolk, after which Brooks was arrested and later charged with murder.
The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman is responsible for investigating every death that occurs in prison custody in England and Wales. Its findings will be considered alongside any other inquiries into the circumstances of Brooks' death.
No further details about the cause of death have been released at this stage, and the investigation remains ongoing.
