East Anglian Air Ambulance still needs £4.4 million to secure a new base and protect lifesaving coverage across the region.
East Anglian Air Ambulance says it still needs to raise £4.4 million towards a new base which will help protect its lifesaving service across Norfolk and the wider region.
The charity has been granted planning permission, subject to conditions, for a purpose-built facility at New Shardelowes Farm on Balsham Road in Fulbourn, near Cambridge.
Its existing Cambridge operation must leave Cambridge City Airport by May 2029, meaning the charity is working to have the new base ready by late 2028 to allow some breathing space if construction is delayed.
East Anglian Air Ambulance launched an £8.2 million public fundraising appeal earlier this year and says strong support has already helped substantially reduce the amount still required.
The charity operates from two bases – Cambridge and Norwich – which work together to provide critical care across Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire and Bedfordshire.
That makes the project important for Norfolk too. EAAA warns that without its Cambridge base, the Norwich crew would have to cover a much larger area and estimates there could be more than 600 fewer missions in Norfolk each year.
The new Fulbourn facility will include helipads, a helicopter hangar, critical care vehicle garages, medical stores, crew facilities, training areas and overnight accommodation.
The charity says it is confident the remaining money can be raised and is asking communities across East Anglia to continue supporting the appeal.
