A major Hopton housing development has been paused while Norfolk County Council commissions an independent review of the scheme’s viability.
A major housing development at Hopton-on-Sea has been paused while an independent review is carried out into whether the scheme remains viable.
Plans by Repton Property Developments include 446 homes and a 70-bed care home on around 61 acres of land south of Links Road.
The proposals received outline planning approval from Great Yarmouth Borough Council in May despite objections from residents, Hopton Parish Council and Great Yarmouth MP Rupert Lowe, who raised concerns including traffic and pressure on local services.
The site is owned by Norfolk County Council, while Repton Property Developments is the council’s property development company.
Norfolk County Council leader David Bick has now confirmed that a fresh independent assessment is being carried out into the viability of schemes being pursued by Repton.
The Hopton development has been paused while that work takes place, alongside another Repton scheme in Attleborough.
The decision does not overturn the planning approval already granted to the Hopton scheme.
Repton previously argued that the development would provide much-needed homes, while opponents have continued to raise concerns about highways, infrastructure and pressure on local services.
The independent review will now examine whether the development should proceed in its current form.
