Cromer’s traditional Boxing Day Dip could be cancelled unless a new organiser steps forward to take responsibility for this year’s event.
Cromer’s traditional Boxing Day Dip is at risk of being cancelled unless a new organiser can be found.
The popular event has taken place for decades, attracting hundreds of swimmers and thousands of spectators to the town’s seafront while raising money for charity.
North Norfolk Beach Runners previously organised the event but stepped away from the role following the 2025 dip.
Cromer Town Council considered taking responsibility for running it this year but decided at a meeting on 14 September not to proceed.
Councillors cited increasing costs, health and safety concerns and uncertainty over whether enough volunteers would be available on Boxing Day.
Mayor Patrick Bennett says he hopes another organisation or group will come forward to prevent the tradition from disappearing.
The annual swim has been running since at least the 1980s and has raised thousands of pounds for local and national charities over the years.
Last year’s event was cancelled because of poor weather conditions.
Mr Bennett says the dip also benefits businesses by bringing large numbers of people into Cromer during the Christmas period.
The council is now hoping an experienced organiser can step forward to take responsibility for the 2026 event.
