Wildfire Warning After Weekend Blazes

Firefighters tackled more than 30 outdoor fires across Norfolk as hot, dry weather kept the county at high wildfire risk.

Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service is urging people to remain vigilant after firefighters tackled more than 30 outdoor fires across the county over the weekend.

Crews were called to a series of incidents involving grassland, woodland and agricultural fields as the recent spell of hot, dry weather continued to create ideal conditions for fires to spread quickly.

Among the largest incidents were fires at Thorpe St Andrew and Thetford Forest, where multiple fire engines and specialist resources were sent to bring the blazes under control. Firefighters also dealt with a number of smaller incidents across Norfolk involving dry vegetation.

The fire service says the current wildfire risk remains high and is asking residents and visitors to take extra care when enjoying the countryside.

People are being reminded not to light disposable barbecues or campfires in rural areas, to dispose of cigarettes safely and to avoid leaving glass bottles in long grass, where sunlight can increase the risk of fire.

Anyone who spots a fire is urged to call 999 immediately and provide as much information as possible about its location.

Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service says even a small fire can spread rapidly in the current conditions, threatening wildlife, property and large areas of countryside.
