Government plans to house asylum seekers at RAF Barnham have been reduced, but concerns remain about pressures on local services.
Government plans to house asylum seekers at a former RAF base near Thetford have been scaled back following opposition from local residents and councils.
The Home Office has submitted revised proposals for RAF Barnham in Suffolk, reducing the number of people who could be accommodated at the site from 1,250 to 931.
The former military base is one of three Ministry of Defence sites being considered for asylum accommodation as the government attempts to reduce its reliance on hotels.
The proposals have prompted protests outside the base and concerns from communities on both sides of the Norfolk and Suffolk border.
Norfolk County Council has formally objected to the scheme, warning that accommodating a large number of people at the site could place additional pressure on public services in nearby Thetford.
Concerns have also been raised about the potential impact on healthcare, policing and local infrastructure.
The Home Office says the revised plans reflect an amended site layout following ongoing assessments of the location.
Officials have previously indicated that accommodation would be provided for single adult male asylum seekers, with essential services available on site to minimise pressure on surrounding communities.
The government maintains that using former military accommodation could help reduce the cost of housing asylum seekers.
However, the proposals remain subject to further assessments and planning approval, with no final decision yet made about whether RAF Barnham will be used.
